Hydrate and Heal Your Skin This Winter

When the extra dry air begins to wreak havoc on your skin. Cold weather and low humidity levels results in dry air, which then steals moisture away from your skin. Indoor heat further robs the air of moisture, as do hot showers or baths and harsh cleansers and. Thankfully, a few key changes to your daily skin care routine can provide you with considerable relief. A natural moisturizer, proper outwear, and a nutrient packed diet are just some of the ways you can protect your skin from this harsh winter weather! So, don’t let the elements get the better of your face. We’ve got some simple tips for a beautiful complexion all season long!

  1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

In order to help prevent dryness of your skin, the first thing you should do is make sure that you’re drinking enough water. We need at least two liters of water a day to perform at our best, and although you do absorb a small percentage of the recommended daily intake through the moisture in the food you eat, that simply is not enough. If you’re really looking to optimize the health of your skin, drinking water is the first step. When you don’t drink enough you become dehydrated.

  1. Nutrient Packed Diet

Healthy skin that requires zero foundation or acne products must depend on something other than good genes and effective products. Naturally gorgeous and clear skin starts from the inside – your diet! The foods we eat get digested and broken down into vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that your body can use to build healthy skin. If you eat highly processed foods, your skin will not be as strong or supple as it should be. For example, if you don’t eat enough protein, you are depriving your skin of the amino acids that it needs to make collagen and elastic tissue, which makes your skin stronger and softer. The bottom line is that whatever is going on inside your gut will eventually show on your skin! So, make sure to include skin-strengthening foods like sardines, chia seeds, flaxseeds, and walnuts, plus vitamin C rich foods like strawberries, citrus fruits, kale, and broccoli!

  1. Dress for the Elements

When the weather starts getting to the extremes, choosing proper outwear is very important. Since our hands are often one of the first places we notice dry skin, be proactive and protect them with a warm pair of gloves. Scarves, hats, and facemasks may also be very helpful against harsh winds that damage the more sensitive skin on our faces and necks. Lip balm should also be used to protect the lips from the harsh weather!

  1. Natural Moisturizer

Homemade hydrating masks can provide much needed moisture during these winter months. Using natural moisturizing ingredients like honey, avocado, yogurt, olive and jojoba oils, almond oil, bananas, and aloe are all great places to start. Mix what you like together to create a cream or paste and apply to your skin. Make sure to leave it on your skin for ten to thirty minutes for longer lasting hydration!

Keep Your Skin Soft and Glowing This Winter

Dry skin can cause you significant discomfort. When our skin becomes dry, the normal protective mechanisms become compromised. Adjusting your diet and your daily routine might be difficult at first, but the longer you work at it, the easier it will be become. Although it may take some time to see the affects, you’ll notice a boost in energy and a healthy glow to your skin. And of course, your skin will thank you later!
